From the Mountains to the Sea

The Dream Adventure Elopement
Elopements give you the freedom to do what ever you want on your wedding day, there are no rules, there are no traditions and there are no expectations from society that you need to fulfil.

You just need to dream up your perfect day and then make it happen!

And that’s exactly what Molly & Mana did for their elopement in Iceland.

A day filled to the brim with adventure and time spent out in nature. Getting ready in a glass house with the immense open sky above you. Jumping into the trucks to head into a valley in the highlands that requires multiple river crossings and gnarly dirt roads to get to. Hiking up a mountain side to your ceremony spot over looking the canyons and mountains all around you. Then down the mountain again to meet the ocean as the sun dips down below the horizon to get the oceans blessing on your wedding.

Thórsmörk
The Hiker’s Paradise

Þórsmörk (the icelandic letter “Þ” is pronounced like “th” in “the” in english) or the Valley of Thor (the god of thunder in Norse mythology) is a valley created by glaciers and glacier rivers that have carved out some of the craziest landscapes Iceland has to offer. It’s surrounded by glaciers and volcanos on three sides and there is only one way in by car; a 4×4 F-road with multiple river crossings. The valley is a hikers paradise and offers endless trails that weave through the mountains with one breathtaking view point after the other.

A Spring Ceremony

This adventure was a team effort between us, Pink Iceland wedding planners and Tófa Travel, a tiny family run travel agency. Run by Magga Gauja who came with us that day as a driver, guide and celebrant. A women of so many talents. If you need a celebrant for your ceremony that is up for adventure, she would be our top pick!

After crossing stream after stream on the dirt road we parked the cars and hiked up a trail leading to a mountain top looking over the wildly dramatic canyons surrounding it. The ceremony spanned the whole gamut of emotions with laughs, tears and some very emotional hugs and kisses.

Hiking in the Mountains

After the ceremony we hiked around the mountain sides as the sun lowered in the western sky, creating images where ever the views and light inspired us. When we reached the bottom of the valley again Glóey from Pink Iceland had prepared a wonderful little picnic with hot tomato soup, Icelandic flatkaka and other delicacies.

Meeting the Ocean

Mana is originally from Hawai’i and it was important to her to have the ocean present at some point during her wedding day. So at the end of the day we drove back out of the valley all the way down to the sea just as the sun dipped below the horizon.

It was interesting for us to see the deep spiritual connection Mana had to the ocean. As we both come from island cultures the ocean holds special meaning to us all but in modern Iceland we are more taught to fear the ocean as it has claimed so many lives through out the centuries rather than embracing it as a beautiful, spiritual, life giving force or deity. But from now on we are going to remember Mana and look at the ocean with kinder eyes.
