Beau and Erica came all the way to Iceland after years of marriage and a few kids, from Ohio to renew their vows under a waterfall in gale force winds. Iceland in the fall has some of the prettiest weather but also some of the craziest so there is no way of knowing what you are going to get.
We learned a long time ago that there is no use in getting annoyed by the weather you just have to embrace what ever the weather gods throw your way and work with it. And that brings us back to Belinda and Terry. They embraced all the weather they got on their wedding day and they got it all. From gale force winds and rain up in the mountains to pockets of calm down by the ocean.
We headed out just before sunset to get the best light and made a quick stop by a lake with crazy rock formations that must have been trolls in their past life, then we drove past lava fields and sulphur smelling hot springs and finally found our selves driving along a sketchy road we had never been down before.
Some weddings start at the edge of the world and of all the weddings we've shot none have been closer to that edge than this one. It took place in Árneshreppur in the Strandir region on the Westfjords of Iceland. A magical place you have to visit in person to truly understand. It's raw, mysterious, infinitely beautiful and remote, very remote. There is a small population that lives there year round, huddled together during the winter months blocked off from the rest of the country when the mountain passes fill up with snow. When summer comes for it's short visit the place is transformed into a paradise and paradise sounds like a good spot for a wedding.
We hiked a hill to check out a waterfall, jumped on some rocks at the beach, ate fish soup at the tiniest of restaurants and finally played in some puddles at sunset.
"Should we just take off and get married in the middle of nowhere in Iceland" was a joke passed around between Pirmin and Sofia while planning their more traditional wedding in Finland.
These two beautiful human beings with their perfect hair just got married a few days ago in the mountains in West Virginia. But in the beginning of this year we had the honor of driving them to the airport in Iceland.
There are just shy of 11,500 km between Reykjavík and Singapore and when people travel that distance for a photoshoot and a proposal and trust us to capture it for them, we can't help but feel very honoured
This wedding represents everything we love about our job. Traveling to distant, off the beaten track places, meeting genuine, awesome people and being accepted by a group of total strangers as one of their own and last but not least absolutely breathtaking skies.
